Johan Smit won a Baader Planetarium Universal Digital Camera Holder donated by Eridanus Optics for his photo of the Lagoon Nebula

Johan writes:
The Lagoon Nebula (catalogued as Messier 8 or M8, and as NGC 6523) is a giant interstellar cloud in the constellation Sagittarius. It is classified as an emission nebula and as a H II region.
Image details:
When the imaging was done, very poor polar alignment caused star trailing when exposures longer than 10 seconds were attempted.
To make up for that, exposures of 5 seconds were used. To gather enough information a very high ISO was chosen.
The end result was 30 x 5 second exposures, at ISO 12800. To combat image noise, 30 dark frames were taken during the same session.
These were stacked in Deep Sky Stacker and very minimal editing was done in Paint.net.
All software used is free-ware.

The image would have been better if more exposures were used, but at that time the whole setup was still unknown and this was one of the first experiments.

Equipment:
Unmodified Canon 650D at prime focus of a Skywatcher 8" F5 Newtonian telescope.
Telescope was mounted on a Skywatcher HEQ5 equatorial mount.
No auto guiding was used. Only the RA tracking motor was running when imaging.
Camera was controlled with the DSLR controller application from an Android tablet.
