Johann Swanepoel's Poster Displays developed for ScopeX 2010

Johann drove his telescope - the largest home-made telescope ever on display at ScopeX  - 1200km from George to achieve “first light” at ScopeX.  A 20” f/4 in the Krige/Berry style - but with his own unique improvements.

He also developed over time,  and brought along,  a poster display and kindly offered ScopeX these files for download by interested parties:

  • Working On Glass  - Machine grinding, polishing and figuring of large thin telescope mirrors. Footnote:  Doing is better than being paralyzed by design fear problems.     Download Working on Glass.pdf  (900Kb)

  • The Foucault Test – pushing the limits.     Download Foucault Test.pdf (731kb)
  • Dobsonian Design - some design and construction consideration for large aperture telescopes (LAT's).     Download Dobsonian Design.pdf  (1.1Mb)

Photos below all taken by his sister) of Johann's 20" telescope and poster display he exhibited at ScopeX and for which he received an ATM Award - see Prize Winners
